Bad news, good news: Why you won’t be able to hire me in February

February Gold narcissus (daffodils)Welcome to February!

It’s a bad-news, good-news kind of month, isn’t it? A few examples:

Bad news: It’s so dreary, dark, and cold. Bah humbug!

Good news: It may be hard to notice, but the days are ever-so-slightly getting longer. Some things, like these February Gold narcissus (daffodils, which are one of my very favorite flowers), are even growing!

Bad news: If the Mayans and conspiracy theorists are right, this may be the last February ever.

Good news: At least we get an extra bonus Leap Day! With 29 whole days to rock it, we can make this the best February EVAR!

Bad news: I have a hard time coming up with things to write for my supposedly-weekly newsletter. Can I get an “amen”? Please? Anybody?

Good news: My friend Beth McKeon, who runs not one but three successful small businesses, is leading a roundtable workshop this weekend called But What Do I Write? I am totally looking forward to this. Come join us — it’ll be fun, and you might even be able to get your next newsletter done in time to watch the SuperAdvertisement –er, Bowl.

Bad news: The sheer volume of awesome stuff I’m doing this month means I will be completely unavailable for new client work, including Units of Wendy, Fairy Godmother packages, and WordPress installations, until April 2 (no fooling).

Good news: Here’s  just a taste of the aforementioned awesome stuff: This is the month Pamela Wilson and I will be releasing a new do-it-yourself guide to building and designing your own website, along with a free class, information-packed PDF reports, and bonus interviews (hint: We have a Skype date with Sonia Simone this week!) If you want to be the first to get the goodies, join my Invitation List! Just fill in your address here, click RSVP, and I’ll keep you in the loop, one step ahead of the crowd.

Oh, and a final piece of good news: If you’re already in my Peace of Mind Program, no worries! I’ve reserved time just for you during this short but busy month, and I’ll continue taking care of your WordPress backups and upgrades.

Hey, that tips the total for February into the Good News column… how about that?

Things to celebrate!

Last year's birthday cupcakes, made and decorated by yours truly.

A quick Monday list of seven things I’m celebrating:

  1. My Website Wish Kit is done! Even though I’m already planning the second edition (which, of course, buyers of the first edition will get automagically), that doesn’t take away from the satisfaction of having a real live thing.
  2. Happy Thanksgiving! Not only to my Canadian friends, but to everyone else, too. I mean, aren’t you all thankful that Canada exists? I know I am.
  3. I’m teaching a live teleclass tomorrow! This is one of my very favorite things to do, and I’ve been looking forward to this for weeks.  I get to walk people through my Website Wish Kit, answer questions, and hear the insights and a-has my people are getting. I am always so energized by these things. Must remember this. (Want to get into this class for free? Get yourself onto my Invitation List and you’ll get a discount code you can use when buying the Website Wish Kit.)
  4. My 10-year-old daughter is running for Student Council president, and she made a website to explain her principles and make her election promises. Okay, yes, I did install WordPress for her, but other than that, she did the whole thing. I am so proud.
  5. My WordPress Swimming Lessons start one week from today, and I’m limiting the class to five people. I’m excited about teaching an intimate group the art of WordPress, and seeing the strides they’ll make in the next three weeks. Registration closes on Friday the 14th!
  6. It’s Columbus Day! I know this is a politically charged topic, and I’m not going to address that. A mentor of mine used to explain that regardless of what anyone’s opinions were about Columbus, she chose to celebrate the day as Italian Heritage Day. She’d make homemade meatballs the way her nonna used to (she gave me the recipe, although I’m sure I can never claim nonna-like abilities), and throw Italian phrases around, and that was that. So: Buon giorno! Molto bene! Allegro con brio!
  7. My boy turns seven years old tomorrow! Which is why I’m whisking myself off to the store to find candy shaped like a submarine to decorate this year’s cupcakes. I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to top last year’s Polar Bear Cub-Cakes, though, since marshmallows lend themselves so perfectly to bear-head-shapes.

How about you? What are you celebrating this bright October Monday?

Website Wish Kit: Coming Tuesday to a telephone near you

Hey you guys, I made a new thing!

It’s called the Website Wish Kit, and it’s a downloadable guide to figuring out exactly what you need to do next on your website.

If you are a do-it-yourself dynamo, you can go through the exercises in about an hour and a half, and come away with a completely new, completely you vision for your website.

Jen Hofmann of Inspired Home Office created the original Wish Kit, which inspired and formed the basis of this product. She graciously gave me her blessing to adapt the three-step Wish Kit process for websites, and specific permission to use the name “Wish Kit.”

(I used my own product myself multiple times as I was going through my most recent round of site changes, and I’m much better friends with my website now than I was before. Yes, me, the person who lives and breathes websites. Honest.)

Avoiding dusty-shelf syndrome

However, if you’re anything like me, even if you love the idea of the Website Wish Kit, and even if you buy and download it right now, there’s a pretty good chance it will sit, unopened, somewhere on your hard drive, for a very long time. Like a book on a dusty shelf that you never had time to open.

And I really want you to use it. I want you to wish. Really wish, with all your heart. Not keep your website dreams on the electronic equivalent of a dusty shelf.

So I’m doing something about it.

I’m holding a live teleclass to walk you through the Website Wish Kit three-step process, answer questions, and chat about the many species of site stuckness.

The Website Wish Kit teleclass will happen on Tuesday, October 11, from 10am to noon, Pacific time.

Yes, I will be recording the class, and everyone who signs up will get the recording. So if you’re at a dayjob, or in the Southern hemisphere, or otherwise occupied, you can still get the goodness.

Get into the Website Wish Kit teleclass for free

The cost for the Website Wish Kit is $37. The Website Wish Kit + Teleclass normally costs $87, but til Tuesday, you can save $50 if you’re a member of my new Invitation List.

(That’s my version of an advance-discount-and-notification list. It’s completely separate from my weekly newsletter, and it’s specifically for people who want to be the very first to hear about my classes and products.)

Did someone say Til Tuesday?

Yep. That was me. Looks like I’ll be dusting off my Aimee Mann albums for working music this afternoon.

::hums happily::

My dear sweet website,

I made you some new clothes, see?

Actually, I had quite a lot of help with that. From people who are way better at design-type stuff than me.

I know there are still broken links to fix, and widgets to spiff up, and maybe a few buttons to sew on…and that’s OK. There will always be things to play with, and I feel really happy about that. Don’t you?

There were some parts of you that were weighing us both down, so I trimmed a little too. On the web, there’s always room for more new and wonderful things, and I have so many new and wonderful things planned for both of us.

F’rinstance, the process I went through to make these clothes and get ready to show them to everyone? I’m going to teach that in a new ebook and teleclass, which is coming out on October 4. I’ll talk more about that tomorrow.

And I have more things planned for the next few months. More playing. More exploring.

Who wants to come with us, me and my website and I?
