I want to share some of my thoughts about teaching, about why I do it, how I do it, and how it’s changed my life. Even if you’re not a coach or teacher yourself, you might still enjoy this post, for two reasons:
- I might be able to help you with a technology issue or problem you’re having. Telling you more about how I work as a teacher will help you know if I am a good fit for you right now.
- You may gain the hope or confidence you need to start your own business, if you read that a regular person like me can do it.
I never thought I’d be a good teacher. I figured that as an introvert AND a Highly Sensitive Person, taking a leadership role would freak me out or exhaust me. And that meant I wouldn’t be any good at it.
So when I was first approached about teaching a technology teleclass, I agreed, but slightly reluctantly. I thought it might be “good experience” and I might make a few bucks, and if I screwed up too badly I could chalk it up to a learning experience.
And what I’ve discovered is that when I am teaching My Right People, I become a fabulous rockstar. My Right People respond to my voice, my words, and my expertise in a way that’s truly humbling to experience.
Here are some of the reasons why I know this is what I’m here to do:
- People get results from working with me. When we finish up a class session, they are inspired to try something new, and they have the confidence to stick with it. Yes, I’m giving guidance, offering encouragement, and asking focused questions—but they’re the ones who are accomplishing the work themselves.
- People tell me I’m good at it. In the past week, I’ve had people (both class participants and folks who’ve downloaded a previous free call) tell me that I have a beautiful and soothing voice, that they are seeing their business in a completely new way, and that they have shifted out of being afraid. I’ve always known I was a good listener; now I’m stepping into being an accessible speaker as well.
- The Small-Business Tree is my passion. Talking about it and helping people apply it to their own small businesses is something I never get tired of. I came up with the tree metaphor in a burst of inspiration that shook my world in ways I’m still continuing to figure out. Say, maybe that’d be a good story for a blog post sometime…
- I never get nervous before a call. Whether it’s a free teleclass, a paid workshop, or a guest appearance on someone else’s show, I’m curious, excited, and at a creative and intuitive peak when I’m connecting with a group. I’ve had seasoned teleclass instructors tell me they still get butterflies before a class, so either I’m completely abnormal, or teaching a teleclass is truly my element.
- At the end of the call, I’m more energized than I was before it started. This is really a counterintuitive result for an introvert like me, who normally has to recharge with some alone-time after a social interaction. Maybe it’s because the classes take place on the phone rather than in person, so my brain doesn’t get overloaded. Or maybe it’s just that the things I’m teaching are fun for me to talk about.
So I have discovered something that feeds my passion, my energy, and my mind. Something that contributes to the world by empowering certain people in specific ways. Something I can really be proud of.
Does this sound appealing to you? If you’re interested in working with me based on this description, or if you want to learn how to find your own “something” and launch a business around it, let’s talk!
